Here are some of our favorite winter craft ideas that seniors can enjoy throughout the season, whether at Lester Senior Living or at home with loved ones.

DIY Snow Globe

There’s something magical about snow globes, and making your own is a delightful way to celebrate winter. To create a personalized snow globe, all you need is a mason jar, fake snow or glitter, small figurines or decorations, and glue.

  1. Glue your chosen decorations, like mini menorahs or winter trees, to the inside of the jar’s lid.
  2. Add a few spoonfuls of fake snow or glitter to the jar, then fill it with water.
  3. Screw the lid on tightly and give it a shake to watch your winter scene come to life!

This simple craft is endlessly customizable, making it a favorite activity for all ages. Your loved one can even gift their creations to friends or family one night for Hanukkah.

Decorate Your Dreidel

Why settle for a plain dreidel when you can create your own masterpiece? Many stores sell unpainted wooden dreidels, perfect for customizing with paint, markers, and stickers.

At Lester Senior Living in Morris County, our residents enjoyed decorating their dreidels in a group crafting session last winter, followed by a spirited dreidel-spinning competition to test out their creations. It was a fun way to celebrate the season and embrace Hanukkah traditions with one another. 

Snowflake Decor

Nothing says winter like paper snowflakes. This timeless craft is simple, fun, and requires just a few materials: white paper, scissors, and string.

  1. Fold the paper in half, then in half again.
  2. Use scissors to cut out shapes along the edges, creating your own unique snowflake design.
  3. Unfold the paper, and your snowflake is ready!

Hang them in windows, from ceilings, or around your loved one’s independent living apartment to create a festive, snowy atmosphere. Every snowflake is one of a kind, just like the seniors who make them! 

Snowman Wreath

Why have a normal wreath when you can have a snowman wreath? Using three grapevine wreaths of varying sizes, you can craft a snowman to hang on your door.

  1. Stack and attach the wreaths to form the snowman’s body.
  2. Wrap a festive ribbon around the head of the snowman as a scarf.
  3. Add greenery, buttons, or even a small top hat to bring your “Frosty” to life.

This craft is perfect for adding some winter whimsy to you or your loved one’s door.

  We love the sun, but we hate the heat! Being that it’s summer in NJ, we’ll be sure to see our share of heat waves. Exposure to extreme heat can result in heat-related illnesses, especially for seniors. Their bodies are less able to regulate their temperatures and cool themselves. When our bodies heat rapidly or when we lose fluids due to perspiration or dehydration, common conditions are cramps, heat exhaustion or heat stroke. In some cases, hyperthermia (absorbing more heat than our bodies can handle) is fatal.  Warning signs of heat-related illnesses Heat exhaustion is characterized as dehydration due to prolonged exposure to high temperatures.
