How JCHC is Celebrating Sukkot

How JCHC is Celebrating Sukkot

Sukkot is a joyous time of year, celebrating the harvest season and the importance of community, family, and faith. At Lester Senior Living, part of the Jewish Community Housing Corporation (JCHC), we take great pride in upholding Jewish traditions, especially during the holiday season. This year, we’ve planned an array of special Sukkot activities, all centered around our beautiful, onsite Sukkah, where residents can celebrate together, reflect on our heritage and create new memories. Let’s take a look at some of the exciting Sukkot events we have lined up for our seniors at Lester Senior Living in Morris County.

Sukkot Activities at Lester Senior Living in NJ

Torah Study Class: Reflecting on the Story of Sukkot

During Sukkot, we embrace the opportunity to reconnect with the Torah’s teachings. Residents at Lester Senior Living will participate in a Torah study class, where we will reread and discuss the significance of the story of Sukkot. This class is a time for reflection, learning, and engaging in thoughtful conversations about faith and tradition. Under the shade of the Sukkah, residents will have the chance to reflect on the themes of Sukkot, such as gratitude, community, and the protection of divine shelter.

“Shake the Lulav & Etrog”: Lester Community Cooking Class

Cooking brings people together, and this Sukkot, we’re combining tradition with culinary delight in our “Shake the Lulav & Etrog” cooking class. Residents will learn about the symbolic importance of the lulav and etrog in the Sukkot celebration and have the chance to get creative in the kitchen! Our culinary team will guide participants in preparing delicious etrog-inspired dishes, like lemon etrog cupcakes, while explaining the significance of these seasonal foods in Jewish culture. It’s a wonderful way to honor the holiday and enjoy the fruits of the harvest.

“CommuniTea”: Tea Tasting and Conversation Under the Sukkah

There’s something magical about gathering under the Sukkah, and our “CommuniTea” event invites residents to enjoy tea tasting while engaging in meaningful conversations with one another. We will sample a variety of seasonal teas, including flavors like apple cinnamon, chai, and pomegranate. This gathering is a beautiful reminder of the importance of community and connection—an essential part of Sukkot. Residents will have the chance to share stories, reminisce, and enjoy the peaceful setting of the Sukkah.

Weston Wine and Cheese Social

Taking place in the Sukkah, this gathering offers our seniors in assisted living the chance to relax and enjoy delicious wine and cheese pairings while catching up with friends. The atmosphere will be warm and inviting, with seasonal decor that reflects the spirit of Sukkot. It’s the perfect opportunity to unwind and celebrate together in a cozy, communal setting.

Wine Glass Painting Workshop

Led by our dedicated activity coordinators, the Wine Glass Painting Workshop will give residents a chance to showcase their artistic talents. In this fun and interactive event, residents will paint their own wine glasses, which can be used during the holiday or taken home as a festive keepsake. This activity fosters creativity and encourages our seniors to express their unique styles, while enjoying the company of their fellow residents.

Movie Matinee: “Ushpizin” in Our Newly Renovated Theater

We’ll be rounding out the Sukkot festivities with a Movie Matinee in our newly renovated theater, which just garnered formal recognition by the Mid-Atlantic Real Estate Journal. Residents will gather to watch the heartwarming 2004 comedy “Ushpizin,” which tells the story of a devout couple in Jerusalem celebrating Sukkot while facing a series of unexpected challenges. This film perfectly captures the themes of faith, tradition, and hospitality that are central to Sukkot, and we hope it will leave our residents feeling inspired.
