Back to School, Back to Senior Living
As the school year begins, students everywhere are returning
to classrooms filled with anticipation for the learning and friendships that
lie ahead. However, just because the school bell has rung, doesn’t mean they
can’t continue to connect with their grandparents or other seniors. At Lester
Senior Living, part of the Jewish Community
Housing Corporation (JCHC), the beginning of the school year marks a
perfect time for students to visit and engage with our senior residents. The
joy and warmth that intergenerational interactions bring to our community are
profound, and the benefits extend far beyond the immediate smiles and laughter!
In fact, intergenerational programs are a cornerstone
of life
at Lester Senior Living, offering meaningful opportunities for seniors and
children alike. The exchange between generations provides an enriching
experience that nurtures the heart and mind, and positively impacts the overall
well-being of our senior residents.

Benefits to Seniors Who Spend Time with Younger
Generations
Decrease Feelings of Loneliness. Loneliness is a
common issue among seniors, whether they’re living at home or at an assisted
living community. Despite the best efforts of staff and families, the
transition to a senior living environment can sometimes result in feelings of
isolation. Regular visits from students can be a wonderful antidote to these
feelings. When children visit, they bring with them an infectious energy and
curiosity that brightens the day of everyone they meet.
For many seniors, these visits offer a cherished connection
to the younger generation, filling a gap that often exists in their social
circles. The bonds formed during these visits provide our residents with
something to look forward to next time!
Enhanced Sense of Purpose. Another significant
benefit of intergenerational programs is the enhanced sense of purpose that
seniors experience. Older adults have a wealth of knowledge, experience, and
wisdom that they are eager to share. When students take the time to listen to
their stories, learn from their experiences, or even engage in simple
activities together, seniors feel valued and appreciated.
This sense of purpose is incredibly important, particularly
for seniors who may feel that their contributions are no longer as relevant as
they once were. By participating in these visits, they are reminded of their
value and continue to play an active role in the community. Whether they are
sharing a story, teaching a new skill, or simply enjoying the presence of a
young person, these interactions reinforce the importance of their unique life
experiences.
Improved Mental and Physical Health. The
benefits of spending time with children extend beyond emotional well-being;
they also contribute to improved mental and physical health. Engaging with
children often introduces seniors to new activities that they might not have
considered before. Whether it’s a simple game, a creative project, or even a
physical activity that gets them moving, these interactions can stimulate both
the mind and body.
Mentally, the challenge of engaging with a younger, more
energetic individual helps to keep the mind sharp, promoting cognitive health.
Plus, the joy and laughter that often accompany these visits are known to
reduce stress and promote a positive outlook, which are essential to
maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
About the Jewish Community Housing Corporation (JCHC)
The JCHC, a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) organization rooted in
Jewish values, was founded in 1983 with the mission of providing senior
citizens with affordable homes in nurturing and enriching communities in
Greater MetroWest NJ (which encompasses 5 counties in Northern NJ). In addition
to owning, managing and operating a variety of residential options for seniors,
the JCHC continues to develop a range of programs, like intergenerational
visits, to enhance resident quality of life and to provide both residents and
their loved ones with the peace of mind that they are in good hands.
