Medication Management: Tips for Proper Senior Safety

Managing medications for seniors can easily become complicated as the list of what they need to take each day grows. When more medications are added to the roster, there is more room for error. Especially when certain medications are taken together or the dosage is incorrect, there is more of a chance of developing harmful and lasting side effects. Making sure seniors are taking their medicines correctly keeps them safe, healthy and comfortable – and fortunately, there are easy fixes you can implement now to ensure they are on the right track. Our experts at JCHC have compiled a list of tips for managing your loved ones medications, so they can avoid adverse side effects and other health issues:

1.    Create a prescription list. Make a list of all the prescriptions your loved one takes that includes the name, dosage, frequency, and why they take it. This will definitely help keep better track of your senior parent’s health. Another great idea is to give a copy of the list to another family member (or two) in case there’s a medical emergency. Tape the list to your loved one’s refrigerator or in another highly visible spot so it can be easily updated and accessed if necessary.

2.    Set reminders to refill prescriptions. Skipping your recommended dose of medication is a surefire way to welcome adverse reactions. One of the best ways to ensure your loved one doesn’t miss or skip their dose, is to ensure they are properly stocked at all times. Set reminders on your smartphone to keep track of when their refills are coming up. Something to keep in mind is that their doctor may require a check-up appointment before authorizing more refills. If that’s the case, plan your loved one’s appointment ahead of time.

3.    Take medications as prescribed by a doctor. Making changes to the dosage of a prescription without talking to a doctor can be quite dangerous. Stopping a certain prescription abruptly or not taking it as directed can cause serious health risks to develop, such as skin disfigurement. That’s why it’s crucial to keep prescriptions organized. A pillbox with each day labeled can be especially helpful if your loved one takes many different medicines both in the morning and at night. Setting alarm reminders for both you and your loved one can also help make sure they take all their medications on time each day.

4.    Store medications properly. Most medications are stored in a cool, dry place that is out of reach of young children and pets. Another helpful tip is to always carefully dispose of medications your loved one no longer uses. The recommended way to dispose is through prescription drop-off sites that can be found at most pharmacies. It’s also important to dispose of expired bottles because the efficacy of the medication changes after the expiration date.
