Did You Know JCHC Senior Communities Have Smart Apartments?

Living at Jewish Community Housing Corporation (JCHC) just got smarter! Thanks to our exciting new partnership with Jewish Service for the Developmentally Disabled (JSDD), we’ve begun to offer innovative “smart” apartments at our independent living apartments in South Orange. This collaboration brings cutting-edge technology into the homes of residents, providing more independence and safety, while giving their families greater peace of mind. Whether it’s Ring doorbells, refrigerator door sensors, or electronic medicine dispensers, residents can now upgrade their living experience through technology that enhances both convenience and security.

The integration of this tech transforms any apartment into a “smart” home, creating a safer and more supportive environment. Let’s take a closer look at JSDD and how smart apartments can make life better for residents and their families.

Who is JSDD?

Founded in 1989, JSDD (Jewish Service for the Developmentally Disabled) was established by the Commission on Individuals with Developmental Disabilities as part of the United Jewish Federation of MetroWest. Since its inception, JSDD has been committed to helping individuals with developmental disabilities achieve their full potential by promoting inclusion in both Jewish and general communities. The organization’s commitment to excellence and advocacy for enhancing the quality of life for its participants aligns perfectly with JCHC’s mission.

Partnering with JSDD allows JCHC to bring state-of-the-art technology into our senior living communities, enhancing the daily lives of our residents. Together, we are working to ensure that every individual, regardless of their age or ability, can live their best life with the help of innovative technology.

Integrating JSDD Life Home Tech into JCHC Senior Living Apartments

JSDD Life Home Tech into JCHC Senior LivingJSDD’s Life | Home | Tech (LHT) program is focused on integrating technology into homes to improve independence and quality of life. This initiative started as a pilot program to support individuals with developmental disabilities in achieving their personal goals through tech-based solutions.

However, since the fall of 2024, JSDD has expanded the focus of the program to include seniors generally, helping them remain more independent while managing daily activities safely.

At JCHC’s Village Apartments in South Orange, we now showcase these innovative solutions in our new Demonstration Apartment. This “Demo Apartment” was established to give residents, their families, and caregivers the chance to see firsthand how smart technology can be integrated into their homes to make life safer, healthier, and more connected.

The technology on display serves many functions, including:

  • Communication and Social Interaction: Devices empower seniors to stay connected with loved ones, reducing isolation.
  • Medication Administration and Health Management: Tools like electronic medicine dispensers and smart toothbrushes ensure seniors take their medication on time and monitor their health more effectively each day.
  • Safety at Home: Technologies such as Ring doorbells and refrigerator door sensors help alert caregivers or family members if there’s a potential safety issue.
  • Daily Living Skills: With smart solutions, seniors can better manage daily tasks, fostering a greater sense of independence.
  • Community Engagement: Residents are encouraged to use technology like Amazon’s Alexa to set reminders to keep up with social obligations in their community and better access essential resources.

Tours of the Demonstration Apartment began in September 2024, and the response has been overwhelmingly positive! Residents and their families have been excited to see how these tech upgrades can improve their safety, health, and day-to-day living.

After taking a tour of the Demo Apartment, JCHC residents have the option to purchase the Life Home Tech solutions for their own apartments. With features like sensor pads on the bed, smart toothbrushes, and alternate door locks, families can feel confident that their loved ones are living in a safe, tech-enhanced environment.

Smart senior living apartments at JCHC offer more than convenience—they provide reassurance. With real-time alerts and monitoring capabilities, caregivers and family members can stay informed and react quickly if something goes wrong. These technological advancements are just one more way JCHC is committed to improving the quality of life for every resident.
