JCHC Seniors Give Valuable Advice

They say with age comes wisdom, but what good is wisdom if it isn’t shared? Younger generations could learn a thing or two from the seniors who are the gatekeepers to this treasure trove of knowledge. Luckily, we’ve asked our gatekeepers (the senior residents at our JCHC communities) to “spread the wealth.” In the segment below, we ask the residents of our senior living communities in NJ to share their best advice, offering nuggets of truth that are short and sweet, yet profoundly impactful to just about anyone. No matter where you are in life, you are bound to relate to at least one of our residents in the video below.  Let’s take a closer look:

Two Major Takeaways: Follow Your Heart and Plan for The Future

You can never go wrong when you follow your heart. Hands down this is the one piece of advice that has to resonate with everyone because every single person has once questioned their purpose or path in life. While some decisions are more complicated than others, staying true to yourself should be your number one priority. JCHC Resident Mary Anne agreed when she said, “Think about what you want to make of yourself, and then go for it! Do something that makes you happy and that you can do for the rest of your life and enjoy.” Another independent living resident, Sue, had the same line of thought when she said,Follow your dreams, that’s one thing. And just go, go with your heart.” So, there you have it: when in doubt, look inward and follow the path where you’re going to be most happy.

Another overarching theme that emerged was financially planning for senior care. JCHC resident Jane said, Plan for your old age. It will come to you eventually, so be ready for it.” In the same vein, Ruth (another assisted living resident at JCHC) said, “Live for the now, but plan for the future. I know it’s far, far away, but it comes very quickly.” The future isn’t promised and it cannot be predicted. While everyone would love to remain independent in their homes as they grow older, our health and state of mind can dictate otherwise. Many seniors require assistance with ADLs (activities of daily living) as they age, and it’s perfectly normal and to be expected. While some seniors unfortunately develop a memory loss disorder which can require more intensive care and supervision. Since no one knows what the future holds, it’s important to take the advice of Jane and Ruth seriously, and financially plan for different senior care options. Here at JCHC’s Lester Senior Living, we have independent living, assisted living and memory care apartments for seniors of all different ability levels. All three senior care options are available under one roof, making movement to increased levels of care as painless as possible.

About the Jewish Community Housing Corporation (JCHC)

The JCHC, a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) organization rooted in Jewish values, was founded in 1983 with the mission of providing senior citizens with affordable homes in nurturing and enriching communities in Greater MetroWest NJ (which encompasses 5 counties in Northern NJ). In addition to owning, managing and operating a variety of residential options for seniors, the JCHC continues to develop a range of programs and activities to enhance resident quality of life and to provide both residents and their loved ones with the peace of mind that they are in good hands.
